PLAYLIST 3 – 01/29/21
The Drop Guy is back for Week 3! Start your weekend off with some positive vibezzz, and groove to some new indie, electronic rock, and a little bit of 90’s grunge to top it off. This is a great playlist to work on your new dance moves.
Let me know what you think of this week’s playlist, and tell me what you’re listening to in the comments below!!!

DARWIN DEEZ – CONSTELLATIONS
Singer/songwriter Darwin Deez is one of my all time favorite artists. His guitar tones, simple electronic drums, and philosophical lyrics create such a unique sound. “Constellations” is off his 2010 debut album, the self-titled Darwin Deez. I recommend checking out the whole album.
GORILLAZ – STYLO (ft. Mos Def and Bobby Womack)
There is no shortage of Gorillaz bangers out there, but “Stylo” has a great mix of all the things I love about them. Heavy synth bass lines, electronic hip hop drums, the iconic sound of Damon Albarn’s vocals, a catchy rapping bridge, and guest features. This song gets me pumped up every time I hear it. Check out the music video for this one too. It stars Bruce Willis.
KAZY LAMBIST – THE COAST
I went through a Spotify phase of only listening to french inspired playlists about a year ago. Kazy Lambist is one of the artists that stuck out to me. The male/female duo play off each other’s vocals so well over synth organs, funky bass lines, and groovy synth drums. The chorus on this song is so catchy. In regards to the band’s decision to speak in english, they had this to say, “English takes me away from my French daily life. I make music to escape into my dreams and create my own world. Also, I want the listener to feel an emotion and for that, the lyrics are not the most important part, it’s more about what the music tells.” I love this because I’m not always focused on lyrics when I listen to a song.
LOUIS COLE – BANK ACCOUNT
Louis Cole is a beast on the keyboards. It sounds like multiple people are playing the keys but it’s just him. He lays down super funky basslines and plays the lead part at the same time. “Bank Account” is such a fun song. He doesn’t want to check his bank account. LOL. No joke, when I first heard this song I put it on repeat for like an hour. It’s such a short song and when you put it on repeat it lines up perfectly and there’s never an ending to the song. The rest of his catalog is equally fun and impressive. Check out his music videos for some 80’s nostalgia.
ALDOUS HARDING – THE BARRELL
I was hooked after seeing the video for “Barrell”. It’s so odd and creative, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of the screen. Aldous is a New Zealand singer/songwriter. I would describe her sound as “modern folk/pop”. She won the Silver Scroll Award for this song, which is a prestigious New Zealand songwriting award. They take music very seriously over there. Previous winners are Lorde, and Week 1 artist Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Check out the video for this song and then prepare to go down an Aldous Harding rabbit hole.
TORO Y MOI – ORDINARY PLEASURES
Try not to get up and move your body when this song comes on. Do you want to guess if he’s a multi-instrumentalist/producer/singer/song-writer? He is. LOL. Toro Y Moi is Chazwick Bundick.
I’m just fascinated by musicians that can put together such quality complete musical compositions. This is one of his more “poppy” songs. Upbeat groove, catchy hook, and wah wah pedal bass lines get me dancing around the house to this jam.
EMPIRE OF THE SUN – FRIENDS
Empire of the Sun broke onto the scene with 2008’s mega hit “Walking On A Dream”. Their electronic pop music and fantasy world persona is just so fun and interesting to listen to. “Friends” is from 2016’s album Two Vines. The chorus on this one always puts me in a good mood. Empire of the Sun is the perfect band to put on for a Saturday night dance party.
JUICE WRLD – WISHING WELL
This song doesn’t have the usual positive vibes of The Drop Guy Weekly Playlist, but it’s such an emotional and eye opening song from the late Juice World that I had to include it. The emotions coming out of him and his cry for help on this song is overwhelmingly powerful. It’s just so unfortunate that his cries for help were too little too late. Sit back and get taken away by this song.
GENGAHR – HEAVENLY MAYBE
Ok, back to the dance floor vibes. Gengahr is a Brittish indi-pop band. This song is from their 2020 album “Sanctuary”. Check out the music video for this one. Very cool.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS – SEVEN CAGED TIGERS
This is one of Stone Temple Pilots more sophisticated songs in my opinion. It’s from my favorite STP album Tiny Music. Like this song, the whole album kind of went in a different direction for the band. It has more focused melodies and complete songwriting, as opposed to heavy distorted guitar riffs, and the classic 90’s grunge vocals that were so prevalent from Scott Weiland, Eddie Vedar, etc… The guitar solo’s on this album are legendary.
