TOBACCO – FULL OF DOOM
I’ve never really heard of any band like Tobacco. When I first heard this song I had to stop everything I was doing and go into a full deep dive. My jaw was dropped for a good hour while I went through some of the tracks in their catalog. I guess the closest comparison that I can think of would be an all electronic version of the band Ratatat. This band is so weird and awesome. If you are a fan of the HBO show Silicon Valley, you may have actually heard Tobacco’s music. They do the intro/theme song to the show. Enjoy this one!
DAYGLOW – CLOSE TO YOU
Dayglow is Sloan Strubble. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. The 80’s indie pop vibe is heavy with Dayglow. From the sound of his music, to his personal style, you would think he came right out of Stranger Things. “Close To You” is the first single from his upcoming project, which i’m really excited about. If you like this song I highly suggest checking out the acoustic version he did from his living room on his youtube channel. It’s incredibly emotional and personal. BUTTER BATH – BED WITH SPRINGS
Australian artist Toby Anagnostis, who goes by Butter Bath, is another artist from French Record Label Nice Guys. I’ve featured multiple Nice Guys artists on past playlists (Jermango Dreaming, LZR, Blue Material), and I continue to be amazed by the talent on the their lineup. Butter Bath is a perfect name Anagnostis’ project. His smooth vocals, ambient background sounds, spacey synths, and wonderful production make you feel like you are in a literal butter bath.
SZYMON – BLUE COLOURED MOUNTAIN
Szymon was an Australian singer/songwriter/performer/producer who unfortunately took his own life in 2012 at the young age of 23. He never officially released an album, but a record producer from EMI mixed a bunch of his music and eventually ended up releasing two albums from Szymon. I love this song so much. It’s so fun and quirky, and makes me want to dance around and just move my body.
THE MATTSON 2 – WAVELENGTH
Twins Jared and Jonathan Mattson are The Mattson 2. I would describe their sound and vibe as a movie score that has structure and vocals. They are incredible musicians and songwriters that collaborate with tons of talented artists. I especially love when they team up with Chaz Bundick of Toro y Moi. Get ready to groove out to this one.
PHIFE DOG (FT. BUSTA RHYMES AND REDMAN) – NUTSHELL PT. 2
The late Phife Dog is from the legendary rap group A Tribe Called Quest. This track was just released, and it’s got that classic 90’s hip hop sound that you would expect from Phife, Busta, and Redman. I’m especially hyped up by Redman’s verse on this one. He kills it. Get in your time machine on this one and put on your Kangol hat and FUBU hoodie.
MOR MOR – HEAVENS ONLY WISHFUL
This track reminds me of The Weeknd a little bit. Soothing soul and R&B vocals, mixed with synth pop, and a catchy hook, this track definitely needs to be put on repeat a few times. I don’t know much about Mor Mor, but i’m really digging his vibe.
DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 – ONE+ONE
Death From Above 1979 is a Canadian rock duo. Their sound is a mixture of The Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age, and Royal Blood. There’s not much to say about this song except it fucking rocks.
IS TROPICAL – CALLING OUT
I love bands with male and female lead singers. There’s something about the back and forth between male and female vocals that makes a track more deep and intimate. “Calling Out” begins with dope break-beat drums, followed by soft synths, and haunting vocals. If you are a fan of The XX, you will love Is Tropical.
THE GROWLERS – CITY CLUB
Lead singer Brooks Nielson has such a unique singing voice. I was completely hooked when I first heard this song. I don’t even know how to describe this song. It has elements of indie rock, punk, and stoner rock. I hope you dig this track as much as I do.
