PLAYLIST 4 – 02/05/21
Wow! We are already a month into The Drop Guy Weekly Playlist! Thank you to everyone that is going on this ride with me. I hope you all are enjoying the blog and music playlists. This week’s playlist is soooooo good. I have some psych-rock, funk, brand new indie music, classic hip hop, and an instrumental piano piece from an electronic pioneer to close the playlist out. Turn your car stereos up or put your headphones on! Enjoy Week 4!

FOSTER THE PEOPLE – BEST FRIEND
Let’s get this playlist started with a feel good jam from one of my favorite bands, Foster The People. I think most people remember Foster The People from their 2010 hit “Pumped Up Kicks”. Their catalog is so much more than just that track. “Best Friend” from their 2014 album Supermodel, is a great example of what Foster The People is all about. Catchy hook, head nodding drum beats, thumping basslines, and harmonies galore.
THUNDERCAT – DRAGONBALL DURAG
I’m going to just come out and say this… I think Thundercat is the greatest bass player of all time. His walking (or should I say running) basslines are hypnotic and addicting. His songs are so playful and fun, and the intricate funky/jazzy compositions mixed with goofy lyrics are just so refreshing and original. “I might be covered in cat hair, but I still smell good.” LOL.
HETHER – OIDAR
Nothing gets me more excited than discovering a new band that I love. Hether is 20-something Paul Castelluzzo. He writes and records all of his own music, which by now you know is kind of my shit. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. I actually had to look up and see if Unknown Mortal Orchestra had anything to do with this track, because it could 100% be a UMO song. The influence is obvious. If you haven’t sparked up your joint yet, do it now and then listen to more Hether. This is total Psych-rock at it’s best, and I can’t wait to see what comes next from Hether.
LO-FI-FNK – WANT U
Get up and start dancing! Lo-Fi-Fnk is a Swedish electro-pop band, and I love everything about this song. The synths have a vintage video game sound like they come straight from NHL 94’ on Sega Genesis. The hard hitting kick drum and electronic snaps are on point. And the slight Swedish accents with english lyrics make their style very unique. Check out their 2011 album The Last Summer.
KANYE WEST – LATE
I’m sure at some point i’ll put together a playlist of my favorite Kanye West songs, but until then here is “Late”. Kanye is undoubtedly one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time. On “Late” Kanye does something incredible. He takes a sample from The Whatnauts and makes the lyric “I’ll erase away”, sound like “I’ll be late for that”. Genius. I could listen to this song all day long, so don’t ask me to make plans cuz i’ll probably “be late for that”.
BECK – UNEVENTFUL DAYS
The most incredible thing about Beck is he’s been releasing amazing music since 1994! Every time he releases a new album I think “Ok, this one’s probably not going to be that good.” I’m wrong every time. This song comes from the 2019 album Hyperspace, and it sounds like it was recorded in a spaceship. Hypnotizing synths, beautiful melodic vocals, and trippy reverb blasts me off into outer space on this one.
PETER BJORN AND JOHN – NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT
I mean just listen to this song. It’s awesome. Everything about this song rocks. The acapella hook to start the song off, then the “boom boom clap” drums come in and get your head nodding. Peter Bjorn and John have no shortage of memorable songs in my opinion. This is one of my favorites from them.
PHOTAY – RECONSTRUCT
I used to watch this show “Man Seeking Woman”, and I always loved the theme song. I remember thinking it was the coolest theme song. I had no idea that it was an actual song until a couple weeks ago! This song came on one of my Spotify playlists and I immediately was feeling it. Then the song got to the end and I was like “Oh shit, this is the theme song from Man Seeking Woman!”. Photay is an electronic/ambient musician who started off as a drummer, so most of his tracks are heavily rhythm influenced. Check out his self titled album from 2014. It’s trippy man.
ELDERBROOK – SOMETHING ABOUT YOU
Sometimes I’ll hear a track and think “Oh this is a dope track that I discovered that no one else has heard” lol. Then I look and see it has 40 million streams on Spotify, and 20 million views on youtube. This track is electro-pop to the max, and sometimes you just need some electro-pop in your life. Check out the music video for this one too. Some interesting choreography.
APHEX TWIN – AVRIL 14TH
Aphex Twin is Richard David James, He was called “the most inventive and influential figure in contemporary electronic music” by British Newspaper The Guardian. So of course I picked an acoustic piano track from him for the playlist. LOL. This is just a lovely song and it makes me feel good. Fun fact: Kanye West used this song as a sample on his song “Blame Game” featuring John Legend.
Have a great weekend!!!
